Innovative master drummer Darrell Green is one of today's jazz scene's leading, most sought-after masterful drummers. As a prolific sideman, bandleader, educator, clinician, composer, and producer, Darrell developed his mastery in the heart of Oakland, California.
Green's drumming style uniquely blends modern post-bop, gospel, and classical influences. His solos are a testament to his effortless technique and captivating rhythms, which breathe life into the music and transport audiences on a spiritual journey. His rhythmic sense, inventiveness, and feel have drawn comparisons to legendary drummers Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, and Art Blakey, yet his style remains deeply rooted in the drum tradition. While Jazz is his primary focus, Green's versatility extends to every genre, from straight-ahead Jazz, Rock to Latin and West African music.
Green's talent has taken him to renowned concert halls and music festivals in over 50 countries worldwide. His performances have graced prestigious venues such as Jazz At Lincoln Center’s Appel Room, The Blue Note Jazz Club, Birdland, The Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, and the Montreaux Jazz Festival, solidifying his status as a globally recognized musician.
Green has toured and recorded with leading jazz artists such as Cassandra Wilson, Pharoah Sanders, Benny Golson, Buster Williams, Mary Stallings, George Cables, Houston Person, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Antoine Roney, Charles Tolliver, Marlena Shaw, Sherman Irby, Steve Turre, Wallace Roney, Stefon Harris, Myron Waldon/Darren Barrett Quartet, Red Holloway, Faye Carol, Amina Figarova, The Black Arts Collective, and Jeremy Pelt. His most recent project, “Confluence: Vol 1,” is a collaboration with his quartet featuring saxophonist and vocalist Camille Thurman.
Darrell tours and leads projects with his trio, quartet, and quintet. He also co-leads a collaborative project with vocalist and saxophonist Camille Thurman. In 2017, Darrell and Camille were selected to join the American Music Abroad Cultural Ambassador Program — touring five African countries (Senegal, Mozambique, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Mauritania).
Green’s commitment to mentorship and education is a cornerstone of his career. He credits his development to a community of mentors, including Billy Higgins, Michael Carvin, saxophonist Bill Stewart, Faye Carol, and Wallace and Antoine Roney. This strong belief in giving back has led him to conduct masterclasses, clinics, and workshops worldwide. Despite his busy recording and touring schedule, Green finds time to conduct residencies at educational institutions, universities, and cultural
centers. His past roles include drum instructor at UC Berkeley’s “Young Musician’s Program” for eight years and instructor at jazz camps such as Jazz Camp West, Stanford Jazz Camp, and Lafayette Jazz Camp. Recent educational residencies include Montana State University, Hart School of Music, Queens College, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and Northeastern University. Currently, he is an Assistant
Professor of Jazz Performance at McGill University.
